*The question of what makes a country a country is not necessarily a straightforward one and there are many different classification systems.  The Oxford Dictionary defines "Country" as "a nation with its own government, occupying a particular territory". Our list includes countries that are dependent territories that have their own anthem and are not necessarily sovereign states, but are recognized as remaining politically outside of the related sovereign state's integral area. It also includes "constituent countries"; that is countries that are constituents of a larger political entity, such as a sovereign state. For instance, Sint Maarten is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Other examples include England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland which are all constituent countries of the United Kingdom.  The Olympic Games also defines "country" in a different way and has an expanded definition which allows certain dependent territories to compete as nations (Cayman Islands and Puerto Rico, for instance). So, as you can see, the question of what makes a country a "country" is not an easy one to answer!
